Meet Kati
Pellon: Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Kati: I love finding inspiration just about anywhere, from a design on a particular fabric to an etched glass design at a store and even apiece of art at a local sushi restaurant.
P: What does your creative process entail?
K: When coming up with a new design or project, I typically mull over the idea for weeks or even months in my head. Sometimes I’ll sketch versions of the design as I think through how it will work. I pull stacks of fabric that might work for the project. Often I’ll arrange fabric swatches on my design wall, leaving them up for several days. Usually I find myself adding new fabrics and taking some away that just don’t quite work. I find I like my project much better in the end when I take the time to consider all aspects of the design.
P: Why do you enjoy sewing/crafting/quilting?
K: At my stage of life as a stay-at-home-mom with three small children, it’s important to me to take time out for myself and work on something I enjoy. I love the actual creation process–putting fabrics together and creating something unique.
P: Do you create mainly for satisfaction, gifts, art or another reason?
K: All of the above. I love giving quilts and bags as gifts to those who appreciate and enjoy handmade items. I also create for the joy of making something.
P: What tips or tricks learned through experience can you share?
K: I’ve learned that careful work makes all the difference. I am meticulous when cutting and sewing my projects. It’s always worth the extra time to do the work right the first time. Sloppy work shows.
P: When and why did you start sewing/quilting/crafting?
K: I started sewing doll clothes when I was just a kid. I’ve just always enjoyed it. Creating was fun for me. Shortly after I was married I bought my own sewing machine and haven’t looked back. It’s been a fun journey.
P: What inspires you to start a project?
K: Lots of different things inspire me to start a project.Sometimes it’s a guild challenge. Sometimes it’s a great stack of fabric I want to work with. Sometimes I just want to try and idea I’ve had in my head.
